ADELAIDE could welcome back up to nine first-choice players for the club's season opener against Fremantle at Subiaco on March 28.

Last Friday the severely undermanned Crows upset a full-strength Carlton line-up despite missing as many as 13 of their best 22 players from last season.

Best and fairest winner Bernie Vince, veterans Andrew McLeod and Tyson Edwards, midfielders Scott Thompson and Nathan van Berlo, ruckmen Ivan Maric and James Sellar and forwards Brett Burton and Chris Knights all missed the clash with the Blues but are a chance to play against Fremantle.

Van Berlo (back) played a half for the South Adelaide reserves on the weekend.

The emerging leader copped a knock to his shoulder during the game, but is hopeful of playing in another SANFL trial on Friday.

Vince (hamstring), McLeod (back), Edward (general soreness), Thompson (general soreness), Maric (hamstring) and Sellar (hand) are all expected to train with the main group on Sunday morning.

Knights has had a protective moon boot removed from his injured foot and will start running this week.

Burton started running on his troublesome knee last week and is still hopeful of a round-one return.

Porplyzia (pelvis) will attempt to join in some football work over the coming days, while knee victims Brad Symes, Brad Moran, Brodie Martin and Andy Otten remain longer-term prospects.

Two players that have benefited from the club's lengthy injury list are Rory Sloane and Myke Cook.

The young midfielders have played every game during the pre-season and Cook said the pair was optimistic of retaining their spots despite the influx of senior players to come back into the side.

"Sloaney and I have both had good pre-seasons. The injuries have opened up spots, but I think we would be pretty close to getting games even if there was a full list to choose from," he said on Monday.

"We've played all four games and have managed to put a couple of good games together. There are obviously a few senior blokes coming back, but in the end we've done our best and now it's up to the selectors."

Sloane, who turns 20 on Wednesday, has been talked up as one of the hottest prospects at West Lakes this summer.

The hard-working onballer made a spirited debut against Hawthorn in round 20 last season.

He gave off six handballs and laid an impressive seven tackles, but copped some flak from his mates for failing to register a kick.

"A lot of my mates back home always get stuck into me about that, but I loved that game and it was a lot of fun," Sloane said.

"The focus was to have a big pre-season and to not miss a session and I've achieved that. I've given it my best shot and prepared myself the best I can. I think I can still kick a goal with my first kick, so it would all right to get into that group."

The Crows will hold their main training sessions on the vast expanses of Elizabeth Oval over the next two weeks in the lead-up to the away clash with Fremantle.

The players will enjoy a few days off from Thursday to Saturday before returning to the club for a solid session on Sunday.
