WHO WILL present this year's Norm Smith Medal?

Of all the challenges the AFL has confronted because of COVID-19, there remains some more logistical discussions ahead of this year's Toyota AFL Finals Series.

One is who will present the medal to the best player named in the historic evening Grand Final at the Gabba on October 24.

The AFL has since 2004 used the chronological order of the Norm Smith medallists to determine who should present it each year.

Former Collingwood skipper, and 2002 Norm Smith winner, Nathan Buckley was due to present it last year however given the Magpies were in the hunt for the flag, the current coach handed over the duties to 2003 winner Simon Black, who draped the medal over the neck of Richmond superstar Dustin Martin.

On the rolling roster, it means it is Port Adelaide premiership winner and 2004 Norm Smith medallist Byron Pickett who is due to present it this year.

The AFL is working through its options for the medal ceremony given the COVID-19 restrictions on the competition and travel, however Pickett is based in South Australia and would be able to enter Queensland.

Buckley, of course, will also get his turn at some stage as well after forfeiting the chance last season because of his coaching duties.

Two-time Norm Smith winner and retired Hawk and Brisbane defender Luke Hodge will also be on hand at the Gabba in a commentary role if the AFL wanted to skip ahead in its chronology. 

The planning for the first ever premiership decider outside of Victoria also includes a decision on the entertainment on the night.

Legendary Brisbane band Powderfinger, who played at the 2008 Grand Final at the MCG, recently ruled out another appearance.
