PEEL Thunder has claimed back-to-back WAFL premierships after overcoming a wasteful Subiaco by 16 points in Sunday's see-sawing Grand Final.

In the last-ever football match at Domain Stadium, the Fremantle-aligned Thunder edged out the Lions for the second successive season decider, running out 11.6 (72) to 7.14 (56) victors.

Dockers-listed half-back Luke Ryan took home the Simpson Medal as best afield for his 22-disposal, eight-mark performance.

Veteran midfielder Danyle Pearce tallied 25 touches with eight inside 50s to help drive the triumph, while uncontracted utility Nick Suban laid 15 tackles.

Out-of-contract Fremantle duo Matt Taberner and Tommy Sheridan both booted two goals, while former Essendon forward Leroy Jetta also chimed in with a couple.

Ben Sokol kicked four goals for Subiaco, but high-flying forward Liam Ryan went goalless after being blanketed again by nemesis Ryan Nyhuis.

Ryan, who won the WAFL's goalkicking and is on the radar of AFL clubs, failed to hit the scoreboard from just nine disposals.

It was a bitterly disappointing day in front of 18,180 fans for the Lions, who have finished minor premiers in the past two campaigns and won 19 straight games this year but have no silverware to show for it.

Boasting a host of Fremantle players, the Thunder have become a stumbling block for Subiaco.

Peel won its maiden flag last year with 17 Fremantle-listed players, and ended the Lions' winning streak in this year's semi-final.

On Sunday, Peel fielded the maximum 15 Dockers allowed, and brought youngster Brennan Cox back from groin soreness to replace ruckman Jonathon Griffin, with wet conditions forecast.

Rain teemed down during the opening quarter, when retiring Freo veteran Zac Dawson got the ball rolling with the opening goal before dishing off another.

But the 31-year-old's day was done by quarter-time after he suffered an apparent ankle injury and was on crutches.

Driving rain gave way to bright sunshine after the first change, and Subiaco fought back to trail 34-31 at the long break.

The Lions dominated the third term, but squandered multiple chances to open a match-winning lead, booting 2.6 to 2.0 for the quarter.

Taylin Duman's toe poke handed Peel the lead early in the last, before Clancy Wheeler wrested back the advantage.

But Jetta's chase-down tackle and checkside goal inspired the Thunder.

Dockers utility Tommy Sheridan then threaded a miraculous major from outside the boundary at the 11-minute mark to put Peel ahead by 11 points.

Subiaco, superbly led by skipper Kyal Horsley (32 disposals) and Chris Phelan (30, one goal), pushed to stay in the contest but couldn't find a scoring avenue.

Peel controlled the clash in the dying stages and first-year Dockers defender Griffin Logue capped the victory with a goal on the final siren.

Impressive first-year Freo ruckman Sean Darcy finished with 73 hit-outs, while Sam Collins was rock-solid in defence and took seven marks.

The Thunder's hard-earned victory was the perfect send-off for Dawson and his fellow Freo retiree Garrick Ibbotson.
