BROWNLOW medallist Tom Mitchell and Hawthorn teammate Conor Nash will be sidelined from training until next year after undergoing shoulder reconstructions this week.

Mitchell aggravated his right shoulder in a training session shortly before the round two restart from the COVID-19-enforced season shutdown.

The 27-year-old midfield star wore strapping in the early rounds, but didn't miss a game on his way to a runner-up finish in the Peter Crimmins Medal, behind first-time winner Jack Gunston.

It was an impressive return to the field for Mitchell after missing all of the 2019 season recovering from a broken left leg. 

Nash has earned a new contract and will extend his AFL career into a fifth season after starting as a Category B rookie from Ireland.

Hawks physical performance manager Luke Boyd tipped Mitchell and Nash to rejoin their teammates at the start of 2021.

"Like with a lot of footballers, Tom has had a grumbly shoulder joint for a number of years and it's something he has managed well over his career," Boyd said.

"Both these surgeries were the type that could wait until the end of the season, which now gives the pair a good chunk of time to focus on their rehab.

"Both Tom and Conor will require three-to-four months of rehab and should return to training after Christmas."
