MIDFIELDER Jack Steele has rumbled to his first St Kilda best and fairest award to cap an outstanding individual season.

Steele's honour follows him earning maiden AFL All-Australian honours and finishing top five in the AFL Players' Association MVP and AFL Coaches' Association Champion Player of the Year.

The 24-year-old averaged 22 disposals, 11 contested possessions, five clearances and six tackles as Brett Ratten largely released him from his tagging duties of recent seasons.

He signed a new two-year deal in September and promises to be a key piece of whatever future success the Saints enjoy.

Steele, who placed third in the Trevor Barker Award in the past two years, also won the player-voted Lenny Hayes Award, presented to the footballer who best upholds the club's values.

St Kilda's best and fairest top 10 demonstrated again just how well its list management team performed in last year's Trade Period.

Steele was a clear winner on 207 votes, with recruits Dan Butler (second, 126 votes), Dougal Howard (third, 122), Zak Jones (sixth, 117) and Paddy Ryder (eighth, 107) featuring prominently.

Notably, the biggest name and highest-priced of the Saints' five trade coups, former Docker and Hawk Bradley Hill, did not finish in that company.

The other theme of the count was the noticeably younger and less-experienced demographics of St Kilda's top-10 place-getters.

Developing ruckman Rowan Marshall (fourth), the club's best emerging player recipient Nick Coffield (fifth), Callum Wilkie (seventh) and Hunter Clark (ninth) also polled well.

None of Butler, Howard, Marshall, Coffield, Wilkie or Clark had played 50 games entering the season and all are aged 24 or younger.

Coffield and Clark were top-10 draftees from the 2017 NAB AFL Draft and each made this year's AFLPA 22Under22 team.

Reigning club champion Seb Ross came in 10th place, while key forward Tim Membrey accepted the Robert Harvey Best Clubman Award.
