WESTERN Bulldogs defender Jed Adcock has announced his first season at the club will be his last, with retirement to come at the end of this year.

The former Brisbane Lions co-captain joined the Dogs as a rookie at the end of last year after being delisted by his former club.

The 30-year-old chipped in with seven games in 2016 and added some experience and maturity to a back half that was robbed of its skipper Robert Murphy early in the year to a season-ending knee injury.

Adcock has also spent this year developing his coaching credentials, and hopes to move into that area of the game next year. He has been a part-time coach with the Western Jets in the TAC Cup this season.

"I want to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to continue my career," Adcock said.

"Although it’s only been one year, I've learned a lot both as a player and from a coaching standpoint.

"I'm ready to move on to the next phase of my life and career, which includes pursuing coaching at AFL level."

Adcock played 206 games across 12 seasons with the Lions before his seven with the Dogs this year as an elevated rookie.

He was originally drafted to the Lions with pick No.33 at the 2003 NAB AFL Draft.
