PORT Adelaide forward Brett Ebert says his club's recent draft intake is its best in four years, and that all four players could make their senior debut this season.

Prized first-round selection Ben Jacobs has lived up to pre-draft expectations of his seamless transition to AFL, but the Power have been surprised by how quickly Ben Newton, Aaron Young and Cam O'Shea have adapted to the workload.

In 2009, the club had three picks inside the NAB AFL Draft's top 16, and used using them to secure long-term prospects John Butcher and Jasper Pittard, as well as mid-sized utility Andrew Moore.

Moore, who overcame osteitis pubis to play seven games, was the only member of the injury-hit trio to represent Port Adelaide last season, but Ebert said the club wouldn't have to wait as long to see Jacobs, Newton, Young and O'Shea in action.

"I think it's probably the best draft we've had since Travis Boak, Robbie Gray and Justin Westhoff came to the club in '06. They (the club) pretty much draft guys to play these days and I think all four of them are a chance to play this year," Ebert said.

"They're all pretty strong guys, so they don't have size to worry about and that's usually one of the main hurdles [for draftees] to get over.

"It's just a matter of them training well, which they have been, and they'll definitely get a chance during the NAB Cup."

Ebert said the draftees' confidence was keeping the pressure on the club's more established players.

"The draftees came in really confident ... some of them anyway. It's not like the old days where you waited four or five years before you said anything," he said.

"They're confident now and are looking to play round one, which is good for the team and is a challenge for the older guys to live up to."

Jacobs' skill on both sides of his body has stood out over the pre-season, while O'Shea has excelled in the endurance testing.

Newton started the summer on a modified program because of a serious ankle injury, which the club believes allowed him to slip to its second pick (No.35 overall).

The West Australian forward is close to joining the main sessions.

Defender Troy Chaplin agreed that the youngsters were full of confidence, but said they had the work rate to match.

"Sometimes kids come in and they sort of live the life for a little bit, but these guys have come in and really knuckled down and the same can be said for the rookies," Chaplin said.

"Ben Jacobs is a readymade player in my opinion.

"Ben Newton is coming back from the same injury that Warren Tredrea had and a lot of people don't know much about him, but he's going to be very handy as well."
