Peter Carey enters the AFL Hall of Fame after a decorated playing career with SANFL club Glenelg that saw him play 448 senior games – an Australian record.
Carey, a man-mountain nicknamed 'Super', joined the Tigers in 1971 and played most of his early football at centre half-forward before eventually moving into the ruck.
He didn't have to wait long to taste premiership success with Glenelg defeating North Adelaide in the 1973 grand final – the last season-decider to be played at Adelaide Oval.
Surprisingly agile for a man of his size and a strong overhead mark, Carey booted six goals that day to be adjudged best on ground – a fitting end to a stellar season in which he led the Bays' goalkicking.
A true club man, Carey took out the club's best and fairest in 1975, 1979 and 1981 – the same year he was awarded the first ever Fos Williams Medal for his outstanding play for South Australia.
He represented his state on 19 occasions and was named in the All-Australian squads of 1979 and 1980.
Carey was named club captain in 1983, a position he held for six years, and skippered the Tigers to more premiership glory in 1985 and then again in 1986 when the Bays went back to back.
By the time he retired in 1988, Carey was the obvious choice to be named the inaugural member Glenelg's Hall of Fame in 2002.
