2010 Philips Sports Dad of the Year
Sydney Swans Captain and Redkite ambassador, Brett Kirk, was last weekend named winner of the 2010 Philips Sports Dad of the Year Award.
The loving father of four is a great role model for young Australians. Brett has been well respected throughout his successful football career for his outstanding leadership skills and generous community spirit. He has also been an important and valued ambassador for Redkite for over ten years.
Tell me more about Redkite
Brett describes Redkite as his “favourite charity”. Reflecting his commitment to children and young people with cancer, he has generously donated the winnings from the Philips Sports Dad of the Year Award, to Redkite. From his work with Redkite, Brett knows the impact the $10,000 will make to the lives of children and young people living with cancer.
Football clubs that encourage their players to actively contribute to the community should be commended. When key players like Brett Kirk take a leadership role in developing relationships and driving activities, particularly with the younger players involved, it makes a real and positive impact to people’s lives.
From the day Brett saw Redkite’s work behind the scenes with the children and families at Sydney Children’s Hospital, he made the decision that he and his team mates, could do more. And that they have.
With his leadership and vision, the players selected Redkite as their nominated charity. We are two teams with one goal - to help children and families through the difficult journey of childhood cancer.
Brett rallies the support of his team mates for hospital visits to brighten the children’s day and to assist Redkite with media opportunities to help build our profile and raise vital funds. With his team mates he also organises large scale family days and other community activities.
For several years Brett has regularly been helping the children with their schooling at the Sydney Children’s Hospital. He utilises his skills as a qualified teacher to read to the children and assist them with their work. He quietly helps without a fuss and has always shied away from acknowledgement.
Brett has also been instrumental in encouraging the Sydney Swans players to join him in regular Redkite Music Therapy sessions at the hospital. Having seen the work of the Redkite Music Therapist first hand and participating in sessions himself, he decided it would be a unique and engaging way to involve the younger players to help the children.
It is Brett’s quiet behind the scenes care, support and leadership that has captured the hearts of so many children and young people with cancer and their families, and inspired the staff and volunteers at Redkite.
While public acknowledgement of his contribution is not what he seeks or expects, we are thrilled the community responded to ensure Brett’s significant care and support at home and in the community has been recognised by being honoured as the 2010 Philips Sports Dad of the Year.
