Springvale 8.13.61 d North Ballarat 5.5.35
Goals: Lawrence 2, Dehey 2, Brooks, Houlihan, Oliver, Pitt.
In terrible conditions yesterday at North Ballarat, the Scorpions finished strongly in the last quarter to move to 2-0 for the 2003 season. In a hard slog in the wet, several Saints players performed well with Steve Lawrence amongst the best with 31 possessions and two important goals. Highly skilled forward Josh Houlihan also returned to form with 25 possessions, whilst Matthew Maguire made the trip back from Perth to have another good performance in a key defensive role. Others to play an important part in the win were number 1 draft pick Brendon Goddard who has been a steady performer in all three VFL games so far, young defender Matthew Ferguson and versatile utility Jason Blake (19 disposals). Conditions didn't really suit the three young Saints ruckman - Trent Knobel, Chris Oliver and Barry Brooks - with all three vying for a senior spot to assist Mathew Capuano. Oliver was probably the pick of the bunch with his performance up forward. Courageous defender Brett Voss was injured early in the game when he received a heavy hit to the ribcage. He will be further assessed today but is likely to miss a few weeks with a cracked rib. Veteran Damien Carroll was again the best of the Scorpion regulars. The Springvale senior team has a bye this weekend with the St Kilda rookies amongst those likely to play in a VFL Reserves game at Coburg.
