I was about 22 at the time and was sitting at home on a Sunday bored. I asked my dad what I could do to keep my mind occupied. He suggested I go to the footy, so I packed up my gear and off I went to Waverley.
I didn’t follow any team specifically but luckily for me the Saints were playing. I sat in the freezing cold watching this game that I had no idea about thinking to myself why did I come here and put myself through this. I didn’t understand the rules and didn’t know any of the players names. As I was watching all of a sudden Aussie picks up the ball in the back pocket, tucks it under his arm and bolts down the boundary. He kept running and running, dodging about 4 players along the way. Finally he reached the forward pocket where I was sitting and on a very tight angle he kicked this miraculous ball and sent it through the big sticks. Before I knew it I was on my feet screaming and cheering. From that point on I became a big Saints fan and went and watched the games every week.
I now live in South Australia so I can’t go to the games as much but I continue to renew my membership every year despite having to watch most of the games on TV. So thanks Aussie for bringing the Saints journey into my life because I’m enjoying the ride.
