THE CAREER of Luke Ball is at the crossroads after the midfielder failed in his bid to be traded to Collingwood, and St Kilda withdrew its previous contract offer to the 25-year-old midfielder.

The Saints had offered Ball a three-year deal that he rejected to seek a trade to the Magpies.

Lyon said the deal was no longer on the table but would not rule out the possibility of Ball staying with the Saints after publically walking out on them.

“We’ll sit down ... He is a respected figure. All year we wanted to retain Luke. There was a three-year deal on the table", Lyon said at the conclusion of trade week.

"What Luke needs to do is go away and assess what he wants to do. There are two evident options which are come back to St Kilda and train and deliver the actions that get you in the senior team; or go into the pre-season draft and take your chances. ”

The news compounded a bad day for the former Saints skipper after Collingwood and St Kilda could not come to an agreement before Friday’s 2pm deadline.

The clubs had tried to negotiate a deal that would involve North Melbourne giving pick 25 to Collingwood to pass on to St Kilda, but Lyon said the Saints were not happy with that scenario.

“We couldn’t get a deal done. In the end it was 25 and 62 on the table. We were unlikely to use 62 and, in our view, 25 was not going to get Luke Ball done," he said.

"We didn’t think it was an equitable trade so we stood our ground.”

The Saints had gained Essendon’s Andrew Lovett and Fremantle’s Brett Peake throughout the week but Lyon said the new acquisitions would not squeeze Ball out of the salary cap.

“I don’t think so. That is list management. We certainly don’t bring players in where we would have problems. That’s all part of the planning,” he said.

“Matthew Drain plans a few years in advance. (Lenny) Hayes goes on the veterans list and (Max) Hudghton goes out. Xavier Clarke’s moved.”
