Thomas, 21, started slowly against Ireland in the first Test at Subiaco but worked his way into the game as the evening progressed.
The young Magpie said he'll be focusing on kicking in the lead-up to the must win second match this week, in an attempt to boost his familiarity with the hybrid game.
"I think it's one of those things where the more comfortable you are in the environment, the better the decisions you make are and the easier the skills become to execute," he said, at Australia's training session on Monday night.
"I'm certainly going to do a bit more work on kicking the ball this week. I put one out on the full there at one stage, which was pretty embarrassing, so all the boys will be looking to hone their skills a bit."
Thomas said he was surprised at how hard it was to get used to the round ball, as opposed to his more familiar Sherrin. He also found the flight of the ball difficult to adapt to.
"It's a lot tougher to kick, and probably the biggest thing is reading the ball in the air," he said.
"You can see how the Irish read it a whole lot better and get in better spots.
"I'm sure as the week goes on this week -- we've only been using it for two or three weeks now -- we'll pick that up and come out on Friday and play a whole lot better."
With the previous International Rules series plagued by violence, rules were altered for this pair of Tests in a bid to clean up the game.
Thomas said he didn't feel like the players were afraid to go in hard on Friday, but commented on how strange it was to play without shepherding.
"I don't think we were playing cautious, but there have certainly been a few different rules with the biggest one being about the shepherding off the ball," he said.
"That's something that comes natural to all of us, to protect your teammates, and when you find you can't do that, it's a bit different.
"But they're the rules, and the Irish come from a non-contact sport so it's probably more difficult for them to adjust than for us to adjust."
All up, Thomas is anticipating his second chance to win in an Australian strip this Friday night at the MCG.
"It was certainly a bit different but it was a fantastic experience," he said.
"It was such a big crowd, and it was a bit disappointing to lose in the fashion that we did.
"But the best thing is, we've got another chance this week to come out and hopefully win the series."
