While it is widely expected that Melbourne will select Watts with the first pick and West Coast Naitanui with the second, Harvey isn’t as sure that Melbourne has made up its mind. Either way, Fremantle's selection will be out of those four talented players, three of whom come from Western Australia.
"There's a bit of conjecture as to what Melbourne is doing at the moment," Harvey said as he departed for Melbourne.
"Normally three days out everybody knows the first 10 picks, but that's not the case this time. Clubs are becoming more conservative in saying what they are doing and the freedom of speech seems to have gone with the top 10 picks.
"We are targeting four players around our third selection. It will be one of those four that we take but what Melbourne does could change how West Coast looks at it, and then what we do. I wouldn’t say Melbourne has gone cold on Watts but the Naitanui factor has been growing on them."
Everybody, including Harvey, will be surprised if either Watts or Naitanui is available at three, and if all goes as planned Fremantle will be choosing from long-kicking Subiaco dual premiership player Daniel Rich and the athletic and versatile Stephen Hill from West Perth.
"Both are potentially long-term players in the midfield. One (Rich) is more advanced in his body than the other but both are naturally gifted. They both fit into the criteria that we are looking for," he said.
"With the early picks you tend to look at the best player available rather than what positions you need, so that's what we will do with three, 21 and 24."
Fremantle has also decided to use all eight selections and won't be saving one for the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft and Harvey is excited about what he will be coming back with.
"What I'm looking forward to is the fact that we are going to have eight selections in this draft and our recruiting area has done a mountain of work. We think we have a lot of our selections down pat and are confident we have it right," he said.
"We need to ramp up our midfield and on top of that need some key position guys who can play forward and back, and a ruckman will come into consideration. We will be using all eight and I'm looking forward to introducing them to the Fremantle Football Club on Monday."
