The club's general manager of football operations, Chris Bond, fronted the media at the conclusion of the first day of the player exchange period and said minimal progress had been made in negotiating a suitable trade for the 21-year-old.
"No, it's the start of trade week and we know it goes until the end of the week, so we're just testing the waters with everyone at the moment," Bond said.
"There's been a few clubs that have expressed interest, so it's just a matter now of going through the process and seeing where we're at with it.
"He's a valuable player to us; we've said that all along. He's a young player, we're going with a young list at the moment, so we've got that option and he's obviously valuable and he's a required player, so we'll be hoping to work that out during the week."
Last week the club rejected Carlton's initial offer of its second-round pick, but Bond would not be drawn on what level of compensation it would take for Fremantle to green light a trade.
"It's in discussion isn't it?" he said.
"I mean Carlton has made it public about their [pick] 24 and we need to have a chat and we'll go from there."
The Blues' contingent, led by chief executive Greg Swann, declined to comment as they left the meeting.
In other trade news Josh Carr's bid to return to Port Adelaide has hit a hurdle with the Power showing little interest in trading for the onballer who was a member of their 2004 premiership team.
"Josh is overseas so it's a bit hard to do too much due diligence when he's away, so we'll have to wait and see what happens, but it'll be unlikely much would happen this week I'd say," Port general manager of football operations Peter Rohde said.
"We don't think we'll trade for him this week. Obviously we want to be able to check him out in the flesh before we make any commitment and he's away so that won't be happening."
That position was at odds with Fremantle's with Bond saying the club required something in return for the 28-year-old, 188-gamer.
"We've spoken to Port and obviously we want to get compensated for Josh," Bond said.
"He's our vice-captain and he's also an important player to us as well. It's the same sort of thing; we'll just see how it goes during the week."
