He's affectionately known as ‘Turtle’, and much to the surprise of many, Leigh Harding is making a bold attempt to play again before the season winds up in three weeks time.
Just under a fortnight since injuring his hamstring during a diving mark attempt against Carton, Harding has begun running again. Medical staff originally suspected Harding had sustained a four week injury, but the attacking mid-fielder has recovered much better than expected.
The number 39 is still confident of getting back on the field in the coming weeks.
"Obviously it's always frustrating to get an injury, especially so late in the season, but all I can do is put in the hard work in my recovery and try to get back to full fitness." Harding told kangaroos.com.au.
It's been an impressive year for the 28 year-old who looks rejuvenated with a role through the midfield. He’s averaging 17 possessions a game, and has worked forward to kick 17 goals so far.
"I've really enjoyed my role through the midfield in 2009 and it's dissapointing to have to miss any football, but I'm glad that it will give another young midfielder a chance to come into the team and try to impress".
The injury to Harding, and retirement of Adam Simpson allowed Daniel Harris and Leigh Adams an opportunity to play against Melbourne last Sunday and both players took full advantage.
