SYDNEY Swans coach Paul Roos says the imminent return of some key senior players in the next month will require a selection balancing act.
Both Leo Barry and Adam Goodes ran at training on Monday and according to Roos are "on track" for Saturday's home clash with Fremantle. The pair missed the 16-point loss to the Bulldogs on Sunday.
Michael O'Loughlin's ankle injury will keep him out indefinitely while it is unclear if Nick Malceski will return to the side after missing the last four weeks with a complaint listed as being calf related.
Ryan Brabazon (14 possessions) and 19-year-old forward Patrick Veszpremi, who kicked 1.4 and picked up 17 possessions, both made their debuts against the Bulldogs on Sunday.
"At the moment, we have a responsibility to the members, fans and sponsors to stay in the top four," Roos said on Monday.
"It's a bit of a balancing act in terms of selection policy, as opposed to sides like Fremantle and Essendon who have a clear focus [on next season].
"If you're eighth or ninth, you're probably throwing in a lot of kids in and looking to the future."
Veszpremi and Brabazon made solid debuts and will push for selection over the next month, even if, as Roos says, errors were made.
"I think Brabazon's handball to [Matthew] Boyd was probably more the fault of the senior players around the ball who didn't let him know to hold the ball.
"And [Heath] Grundy kicked it back into Murphy, who then handballs to Gilbee. So clearly the younger players make more mistakes there's no question about that.
"But the good thing about playing the young kids is that they are fit and they do run. So we've got to be careful we don't just play the senior players because of their names."
