Springvale recorded an impressive 22 point victory over Werribee to top off a great Sunday afternoon for Saints fans.
The Scorpions led at every change to run out convincing winners.
The most pleasing aspect for Saints supporters was that the players won their positions all over the ground. This is something they’ll have to do regularly to get a game for St Kilda.
With Barry Brooks dropped to the Springvale reserves to find some touch, Nick Stone deputised superbly in the ruck to easily outplay 211cm Bulldog ruckman Peter Street.
Stone collected 31 possessions and took 14 marks in a best on ground performance.
He was ably supported in the midfield by Springvale Captain Steve Harrison (34 possessions, 2 goals) and St Kilda veteran Justin Peckett (27 possessions, 10 marks) who seemed to enjoy starting the game out of the centre square.
In the forward line Sam Fisher provided a strong target on the half forward line all day. The South Australian finished the day with 23 possessions, 12 marks and 3 goals in a performance to remind the selectors that he is keen to add to his one senior game.
Daniel Wulf and Josh Houlihan bobbed up with 3 goals each while full forward Shayne Smith kicked 2 in a better performance.
Matthew Ferguson was amongst the better players on the ground collecting 20 possessions, taking 8 marks and running forward to kick a goal to complete a solid day of work in defence. Jason Gram (16 possessions) had a better game and showed his pace on a number of occasions.
Leigh Montagna and Allan Murray also contributed in what turned out to be a very good day for the St Kilda Football Club.
Next Saturday the Scorpions will be keen to make it 2 out of 2 against the top of the table Port Melbourne at TEAC Oval. Once again the game is the ABC TV match of the round (1pm start) but better still with no Saints game in Melbourne get down to the ground and support the team.
