FORMER Port Adelaide vice-captain Jacob Surjan says there is no defensive role he is unprepared for as he looks to continue his 121-game AFL career.

The nine-year Power veteran is selling himself as a player who can take on some of the toughest defensive roles in the land.

Surjan was delisted by new Port coach Ken Hinkley, but at 27 he's adamant he still has plenty to offer.

"There's not too many guys who can play on the dangerous small forwards in the League … like Eddie Betts, Cyril Rioli, Mark LaCras, Stephen Milne," Surjan said.

Surjan is still hopeful of getting a deal done by 5pm Friday, with up to three clubs said to be seriously interested.

"Obviously it'll be a very nervous 24 hours, but if it doesn't happen there'll definitely be other opportunities," he said.

If Surjan misses out, his manager Bruce Kaider will turn attention to finding his client somewhere to spend the pre-season, with the hope of securing a role when the next window opens.

That could be a role at expansion clubs Greater Western Sydney or Gold Coast, where he could take on a leadership position.

"I'm definitely interested in the playing-coaching side of footy," Surjan said.

The defender's departure from Alberton Oval did come a surprise, but he's quickly moved on.

"[I'm] really disappointed to leave," he said.

"I really wanted to stay and learn for at least another year or two under Ken Hinkley and the other coaches and just see how the atmosphere would change.

"I absolutely loved and will cherish all the moments that I've had there."
