Voss on Jonathan Brown’s injury

“We thought the program he was on would get him through.”

“He certainly got himself to 90% fit, but he’s hovered there for a couple of weeks now. We want to find that last 10% and that last 10% requires rest.”

“I would think he will be out for at least four weeks.”

“The one thing I know about competitors is they’ll always inflate exactly how they are going. He was adamant he wanted to play, but at some point in time the coach has to save you from yourself.”

“My job as coach has been to try and read his body-language more than anything else, because you expect Browny will always want to be there.”

“In one way it was tough and in another way I think he knew (that he needed a break). He knows his body as well as anybody and he realised that he had stopped making some progression.”

“It just got the stage where there was no point going any further.”

Voss on the mood of the group

“It’s not buoyant, that’s for sure.”

“But the guys are showing a genuine ability to pick themselves up. They are still committed to doing the right things and their attention to detail is still there. They’re just not getting rewarded.”

“There are two things you want to get out of every match - one is genuine competitiveness and the other is the four points. If you don’t get the four points, you at least want to maintain your competitiveness. The disappointing part from the Bulldogs game was that we got neither.”

“So we walk away without any reward and the effort they are putting in during the week isn’t translating consistently out on the field.”

“If you don’t get it on the weekend then you’ve got to train it and that’s the cold hard reality. There’s no easy way through it. As I said after the game, there are no reinforcements coming. There’s no cavalry over the hill. Our backs are against the wall and we have to forge our way through it.”

Voss on Tigers full-forward Jack Riewoldt

“We’ve seen him a few times. We obviously start looking pretty closely at our opposition about a month out from the game and the past month just so happens to be the best month of his career.”

“He’s kicked around 20 odd goals in the last three weeks and really accelerated that with 10 last weekend against West Coast. He’s really important to them.”

“Equally important is the supply he’s getting. Their midfield really seems to be working well together.”
