Hard-nut Leigh Adams says North will be working hard in order to change its fortunes in round four.

Adams spoke exclusively to kangaroos.com.au moments after stepping off the track on Wednesday and said the session was far from easy.

"It was a very tough session today; bit of a throwback to pre-season type training. We went through a few things that we needed to rectify for the weekend and I think we’ll continue to do that for the rest of the week."

With 24 possessions, Adams was one of his team's best against the reigning premiers on Saturday in what was otherwise a day to forget.

"The boys after the weekend are pretty disappointed and know we need to work on a few things. We came up against the best team in the league and we saw just how fit they were and the running patterns that they run.

"Having the bye in round three with not too many injury concerns it’s a good time to push ourselves a bit harder to take us to the next level."

Winless and with a second trip to Perth looming, some pundits are predicting further pain for the Kangaroos in the coming weeks, but the tight-knit group are confident in their own ability.

"We’ll be going over nice and fresh and ready to take on Fremantle," Adams added.

"It’s important for us to get a win on the board; some of the boys haven’t tasted victory yet with new players like Atley and Richardson coming into the side. It’s good to get some new boys in to lift the team, Ats and Richo give that extra run through the midfield and carry the ball through the lines."

Although somewhat unheralded in some football circles, Adams' uncompromising approach is beginning to turn heads. It's something he'd much rather be known for.

"My injuries from the past seem to come up in every interview I do so hopefully by the end of this year I’ve put a full season together and we can talk about the games I have played instead of focusing on the ones I’ve missed."

Now a regular in the North Melbourne squad, perhaps the greatest question now is where should he play; crumbing up forward or hitting the packs in the middle?

"I definitely prefer to play in the midfield.

"Getting a full pre-season under my belt this year has been key to my improvement and has helped me push up more into the middle.

"Obviously with the new sub rule I’m going to have to stay on the ground longer and spend some time up forward as well, but if I can spend 70% up in the midfield and 30% closer to goal, I’ll be pretty happy with that."
