AFL operations manager Andrew Demetriou has given Geelong’s Ben Graham short shrift over Graham’s complaint that a $2000 fine imposed against him was ‘unfair’.

Graham tried to contact Demetriou late on Tuesday to find out why he’d been fined for his boundary line confrontation with Luke Darcy in round one at Telstra Dome, when Darcy was not penalised.

But Demetriou has effectively said that the matter is closed.

“He rang me late yesterday afternoon when I was in a meeting,” Demetriou told 3AW on Wednesday morning.

“If Ben would like me the courtesy of a return call then I will call him, but it will be a very short phone call.”

“It’ll say that we do not condone at all players getting up off the bench and going to the boundary line with the potential of inciting an incident as a player is coming off the ground,” he said.

Demetriou said that he based his decision to fine Graham and not Darcy on information provided by a range of interested parties.

“Based on all the information we received from ground observers and interchange stewards and umpires observers and others, it was certainly not something we were at all happy about,” he said.

Demetriou said that the AFL was unlikely to agree to Graham’s suggestion that his fine be passed on to charity.

“We won’t be getting advice from Ben Graham where fines should be going,” Demetriou said.
