A BITTERLY disappointed Adam Goodes was lost for words after the Sydney Swans were handed a 73-point thrashing by Melbourne on Sunday.

The Swans went into the match favoured to continue their run to September but were badly outplayed in almost every facet of the game in the shock defeat.

“I don’t know what sort of words to say about it. It’s a disappointing loss,” Goodes said.

“They just cut us up with their ball use. They were up and going and with a top-eight spot on the line to come in the first quarter and have them kick eight goals was more than disappointing.

“They just kept coming and coming and we really didn’t try to mix it with them - that was the most disappointing thing.

“At half-time we could have settled maybe got two or three goals back in the third quarter and then made them fight hard in the last but it was just one of those days where they were really exceptional and we played absolutely crap.”

Goodes said the team’s preparation had been flawless and the mood good leading into the game leaving him at a loss to pinpoint any reasons for the result.

“There are no excuses for what we turned up today,” he said.

“We had a seven-day break, we had two good training sessions and were coming off a team that hadn’t been playing good footy or starting well. For them to put eight goals on us [in the first quarter] was really embarrassing for us as a group.

“You’ve got to give them credit - they played fantastically. They really took it up to us and beat us all over the ground.”

The Swans will need to get over the loss quickly with a big clash against the reigning premiers looming.

“We’ll lick our wounds, but we’ve got a six-day break to prepare for Geelong now,” Goodes said.

“We’ve just really got to bounce back. Our season’s still alive, we’ve got to make sure that it is still alive, and we really can’t accept what we turned up today.”
