The Collingwood Football Club was today formally advised of the joint decision between the Essendon Football Club and Etihad Stadium to rename the Coventry end of the ground the ‘Lloyd’ end for Essendon home matches.
Collingwood is disappointed it was not consulted or informed earlier of this decision, and sought an explanation from Etihad Stadium CEO Ian Collins and the Essendon Football Club earlier today.
During those discussions it was agreed that Collingwood would support a celebration of Matthew Lloyd’s exceptional career this weekend, but the CEOs and Presidents of Collingwood and Essendon will meet next week, along with the CEO of Etihad Stadium, to negotiate a suitable position that acknowledges the contributions of both champions.
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said: “In celebrating Matthew Lloyd’s career, no fair minded person would feel it appropriate to denigrate the contribution of someone the calibre of Gordon Coventry.
“We acknowledge that this was not the intention of either party, but unfortunately it would’ve been the result. As such, all three groups, in the spirit of commemorating the heroics of both stars, will meet to come up with an appropriate compromise for Essendon’s next home game.
“I thank Essendon chairman David Evans for his understanding of the sensitivities of all those involved.”
Mr McGuire was also in contact earlier today with Gordon Coventry Jnr, who was fully supportive of the above outcome.
