NORTH Melbourne's prospects of playing finals football rest on some key contributions and improvements within the team, according to midfielder Brent Harvey.

Seventh on the ladder after seven matches, the Kangaroos' next month includes matches against West Coast (Carrara), Western Bulldogs (MCG), Brisbane (Gabba) and Geelong (Telstra Dome).

Generally pleased with the efforts of his teammates, Harvey singled out forwards Corey Jones and Nathan Thompson and new-look half-back Leigh Harding.

Thompson and Harding have made awaited returns from knee reconstructions to play important roles for the side, while Jones often flirts with brilliance.

"If Corey Jones had have been kicking straight for the last couple of weeks, he would be in sensational form," Harvey quipped. "His first couple of games were great but it just so happens he's kicked a few points in the last three weeks. If he had have kicked straight, he probably would have kicked another seven or eight. I know he kicked 1.5 in one of those games.

"For Nathan Thompson to come back from a knee reconstruction [is terrific], and also Leigh Harding. Everyone sort of forgets about Turtle (Harding), but he's slotted back in. He was a forward before he did his knee and now he's come back and got his chance down back and is really grabbing it with both hands. He's been probably one of our most consistent players."

Harvey wasn't as generous in self-assessment, but is comfortable with his contribution after seven rounds.

The premiership player has averaged close to 25 possessions per game, with 34 against Collingwood in round five.

"My first two games were not up to standard, but the next four or five have been thereabouts," he said. "I set a few goals at the start of each game and if I can achieve them, it means I'm contributing to the footy club.

"I think I've done that the last five weeks."

But what has impressed Harvey most in 2008 is the spirit of the playing group.

"I think our selfless approach to the games [has been the biggest positive]," he said. "We know it doesn't matter if Thommo kicks six goals or Jonesy pops up and kicks six, we're really spreading the workload at the minute.

"Those younger players like Leigh Harding – when I say younger they're 24 or 25 now – they're the blokes we need to get improvement from. I think a few of them have stood up and I think a few of them have a got a little bit to go.

"Our forward line structure and our defenders have stuck [at it] and have been pretty good, so there's a few positives to come out of the start of the season.

"If we can just work on them and improve by five, six or seven per cent, we can make the finals again."
