ADELAIDE captain Simon Goodwin says the Crows will wait until December before deciding if he will lead the club again in 2009.

Goodwin, 32, took over the reins at Adelaide last season following the retirement of club legend and good friend Mark Ricciuto.

The four-time All-Australian played stand-in skipper for much of the 2007 season while Ricciuto struggled with injury, but now Goodwin, too, is starting to feel the wear and tear after more than a decade in the game.

Goodwin, despite playing every game last season, was severely restricted by a back injury that prevented him from training with the main group and playing to his full potential.

A number of captains, including Goodwin's premiership teammate and ex-Richmond skipper, Kane Johnson, have already relinquished their roles ahead of 2009 and Goodwin revealed he was no certainty to lead the Crows again next year.

"We haven't really discussed it [the captaincy]. As a club, we haven't talked about and, more importantly, we haven't talked about it as a playing group. We'll have that discussion later in December and look at all the various options," Goodwin said.

"Obviously, the leadership group will be chosen and, if I'm lucky enough to be in that, we'll see how we go.

"It's a great honour to skipper a footy club that you love, but I am 32 and I am getting older."

Goodwin, who was a surprise second-place finish in Adelaide's club champion award last season, will remain on a modified training program for at least the next fortnight in an attempt to manage his back injury.

The dual premiership player revealed he'd been suffering from facet joint and disc problems in his lower back for the past two years.

"The back is coming along well. It's [the injury] been an issue that I've had for the past couple of years, but last year it probably got a little bit worse than I would've liked, hence why I had a really good break and am building up really slowly this year," Goodwin said.

"It creates a bit of stiffness in my back and makes it hard to train and do the things you want to do. It affects you at training and in games, but I certainly wasn't going to use it as an excuse for my form in the second half of the year."

Goodwin was a revelation up forward at the start of 2008, kicking 23 goals in the opening eight games, but he managed just 10 for the rest of the season.

The triple best and fairest winner was restricted to the bike on Friday, but was confident of being 100 per cent by round one.

"I hope to be fully fit next year," he said.

"I like to train hard and if I can't do that then my time is probably coming near to an end, but I'm sure the back will be fully fit and I'll be ready to go."
