In March of 1970, I was transferred by my employer from Wollongong (N.S.W.) to Melbourne. The company organised a welcome party for me on the Wednesday night where I met one of my new colleagues who asked me what I knew about Aussie Rules. My reply was short and concise – nothing. He said that he was a St.Kilda supporter and invited me to join him and a friend at Moorabbin the next Saturday for the first match of the 1970 season. I agreed and found myself with the two new friends and six cans of Melbourne Bitter at the Northern end of the Moorabbin ground to watch the Saints go around against North Melbourne.
The rest is history, I managed to watch 19 home and away games that season, was nominated by Lindsay Fox to join the Footy Club. The next year, 1971, I watched every Saints match including the heart breaking Grand Final. I did not believe that I would do such things as sitting in the members stand at Moorabbin while my wife and kids stood in the outer. But, that’s the passion that grows from genuine fans.
While away on business last week I stopped off at a shop at Melbourne Airport and bought myself one of the new look beanies. My wife told me to act my age – after all, I am going on 70.
