Brent Prismall is already nearly three months into his pre-season program.

Driven by a burning desire to make his senior debut this season, the 19-year-old wrapped his end of season break into just a couple of weeks and began pounding the pavement as soon as he could.

With this head-start, the Cats first pick in the 2004 draft says he is fitter and faster than ever and now desperate for a guernsey in Geelong's opening NAB Cup game in seven week's time.

"That's my number one goal, I want to play in that first pre-season game'' said Prismall, who fought out all of last year in the VFL.

"Hopefully if I play well in the practice matches I'll give myself that chance.

"And who knows, if I work hard enough maybe some more opportunities will present themselves throughout the season.''

It is with this football focus that the in-and-under midfielder has modelled his playing style and rigorous training regime around one of the hardest workers at the Geelong Football Club in Cameron Ling.

"He's the perfect example,'' he said.

"He's always the bloke that runs the furthest and does all the extra hard things after training.

"He's a bit of a role model for me, him and Joel Corey. I like to base my games around how they play.

"I try to watch all their videos just to see what they do in a game and then watch mine to compare what I do.''

The irony is that while Geelong's already plentiful midfield stocks kept Prismall from tasting senior action last season, it has also ensured that the ex-Werribee junior has had many tutors to help quicken his football development.

"At the club we are in a fantastic position because we've got such a good midfield group,'' he said.

"But that's not a negative, it's a positive because they are only going to help make me a better player because I can only learn from them.

"If I can do that, then hopefully I might be able to sneak in for a couple of senior games.''

For Prismall to crack senior level he knows that he must first become more consistent in the twos.

And although he was generally happy with his contribution last season, he laments not being able to produce his best more regularly as the VFL team struggled at the bottom of the ladder.

"At the start of the year I thought I played pretty well,'' he said.

"But after that it was like one good game then one bad game, which was frustrating for me.

"I just struggled to string two or three good ones together

"But hopefully a longer pre-season getting fitter and stronger will convert into good form and more consistency.''
