The two-time best and fairest winner had a trigger clause in his contract that enabled him to extend his time with the Crows.
As a free agent he had the option of looking at options elsewhere but he stuck with the club where he has made his name since he returned to Adelaide after four years and 39 games with Melbourne.
The 30-year-old once again played every game this season. He has not missed a game since round nine, 2010 and has missed just three games since joining the Crows in 2005.
He has finished top three in five of the past seven club champion counts, however he finished seventh in the 2013 best and fairest.
The club's list manager, David Noble, said Thompson was a key part of Adelaide's on and off-field future.
"Scott had an important role to play in our playing group not only on match day but in a leadership capacity mentoring our emerging midfielders," Noble told the Adelaide club website.
"He showed resilience to play every game this year and we expect him to be a key contributor again in 2014."
