Nick Stevens received the best possible early Christmas present today when he was cleared by his specialist to resume full contact training.

“I have been doing most of the training but since the operation I have not been able to do any contact work so it is fantastic news. While I was sure I would be ok I was still very nervous waiting to see the specialist. Thankfully he gave me the news I wanted and it is now all go for 2008,” an elated Stevens said this afternoon.

Stevens was in outstanding form early in 2007 winning his second Michael Tuck Medal in the NAB Cup Grand Final and carrying that form into the home and away season. Unfortunately for Stevens and for Carlton his season was to last just three matches before a serious neck injury ended his season and threatened his football career.

The decision to have the season ending neck surgery was made after Stevens consulted a number of specialists in relation to the injury. It was decided at the time that the surgery was the best option for his long-term health and would also give him the chance to be fit and ready for the 2008 season.

In early May Stevens underwent surgery that involved the removal of the injured disc and disc prolapse, a bone graft from his hip and the insertion of a small plate and screws into his neck.

Not surprisingly Carlton coach Brett Ratten was also thrilled with the news.

“This is fantastic news. Nick has been training really well and doing about 90 percent of the work and now he will be able to step up to full training and be involved in the competitive work and game related activities. He has been raring to go and this will be great for his confidence and a real boost for everyone with his leadership and experience”.

Stevens is expected to commence his return to full training duties on Thursday at 9.00am at MC Labour Park in what will be Carlton’s final skills session for this year.
