Williamstown were defeated by 14 points by a strong Werribee side in the ‘Battle of the West’ in front of a big crowd in perfect conditions at Burbank Oval.

Both sides were fresh from the mid season break and Willi made 5 changes from their previous game – Rhyce Shaw, Harry O’Brien and Chris Egan were promoted to the Collingwood Seniors, Ryan Cook was injured and Clinton Proctor was dropped to Willi Reserves. Into the side came Adam Iacobucci and Julian Rowe back from Collingwood, Jason Cloke and Rayden Tallis from injury and Liam Picken promoted from the Reserves.

Werribee came out of the blocks with intensity with Will Minson dominating in the ruck and ex magpie Rookie James Podsiadly dominating up forward. Werribee goaled twice before Danny Stanley goaled courtesy of a 50 metre penalty. Julian Rowe followed with a fine running goal as the footy was being moved quickly by both sides. Adam Iacobucci, Brett Johnson and Steven Greene were prominent in midfield and their dominance resulted in Andrew Williams and Cameron Cloke slotting majors before the first break to reduce the lead to 4 points.

Quarter Time Score: Williamstown 4.4 (28) Werribee 5.2 (32)

The second quarter saw both sides trade goals as it was a free flowing game of football. Liam Picken had a big impact off the bench with his hardness and Brad Lloyd and Ben Davies were busy. Werribee was inaccurate in front of goal and Podsiadly was now onto his third opponent in Alan Toovey after Tristen Walker and Jason Cloke had matched up on him earlier. Goals to Galea after a huge pack mark, Picken, Rose, Rusling and Greene reduce the lead to 3 points.

Half Time Score: Williamstown 9.4 (58) Werribee 9.7 (61)

The third quarter saw Werribee come out full of running. With a dominant ruck and midfield and their defence standing tall they slammed on the opening 6 goals of the quarter to establish a 38 point lead. Jordan Barham who had been switched from defence to forward kicked 4 goals in 10 minutes to transform the whole game. Cameron Cloke went into the ruck and Brett Johnson lifted as Willi kicked 3 late goals to Tallis, Galea and Rose to reduce the lead to 17 points at the last change.

Three Quarter Time Score: Williamstown 12.8 (80) Werribee 15.7 (97)

Williamstown kept their momentum going when Picken snapped a great goal in the opening minutes and when Galea marked and goaled twice Willi found themselves in front. Werribee regained the lead but Galea kicked his third for the quarter to tie the scores. Jason Cloke was in everything and Dave Fanning lifted but Willi blazed away up forward and had critical turnovers. Werribee kicked consecutive goals before Rose kicked his third goal. Holding an 8 point lead when the siren sounded, Werribee goaled after the siren to win a great game of VFL Football by 14 points.
