Skipping also helps improve:
- 'Endurance', or staying power
- Balance
- Rhythm
- Speed
- Muscle power
- Co-ordination
- Bones.
Starting out
Skipping can be difficult at first but, once you get in a rhythm, you'll improve quickly. Start slowly, swinging your rope just fast enough for you to time your jumps. Increase speed as you get more confident. Here are some other tips:
1. Choose a good rope that's the right length
To choose the rope that's right for your height, stand on the centre of the rope and lift the handles - they should reach your armpits. Comfortable handles are good, too!
2. Wear shoes that feel cushioned and comfortable when you jump
3. Avoid jumping on concrete
Jump on a surface that's not too slippery but is softer to land on than concrete. A carpeted floor is great – as long as there's room to swing the rope!
4. Put some music on
It can help you keep up a rhythm!
As you improve, you can try different styles of skipping, such as jumping with both feet at once or running while skipping.
