PROMISING Hawthorn midfielder Jed Anderson could miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his troublesome left shoulder.

The luckless Hawk has been sidelined since he copped a heavy knock while playing for Box Hill on March 29.

Anderson has been on the club's long-term injury list since late April, with the Hawks hopeful an eight-week recovery period would see him return to the field this season.

But it appears the talented 20-year-old has not responded to treatment and Hawks assistant coach Cameron Bruce confirmed on Friday that Anderson has gone under the knife.

"He had the operation and he's just in recovery mode at the moment," Bruce told reporters at Melbourne Airport.

"I'm not too sure of the exact (recovery) time, it will be a reasonable time out. He'll make sure he gets the right rehab while he's out of the game.

"He'll come back and he'll be an important player for this club down the track."

Recuperating Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson declared in April that surgery would be potentially season-ending for the young Hawk.

It's another setback for both the player and the club, which is battling a shocking injury toll this season.

Since arriving at Hawthorn in the end of 2012, Anderson has played just six games and none this year.

In November last year Anderson suffered a severe bout of pneumonia that delayed his start to pre-season.
