ADELAIDE
Scott Thompson is again a touch-and-go prospect as he deals with his ongoing hamstring issue, while Daniel Talia is in some doubt with concussion. Midfielder Sam Kerridge is ready for selection, but may return via the SANFL. Lewis Johnston is tipped to play SANFL this week following hand surgery in mid-May. Tom Lynch could return to the senior line up after a solid SANFL display (26 disposals, seven inside 50s, one goal). Brent Reilly (25 disposals, 10 marks), Cam Ellis-Yolmen (25 disposals, one goal) and Charlie Cameron were also good. BRISBANE LIONS
After two straight wins and no injuries or suspensions, it's unlikely Justin Leppitsch will make many – if any – changes for Sunday's home match against Adelaide. Matthew Leuenberger has now played two matches at NEAFL level after a long lay-off and could come into consideration to ruck alongside Stefan Martin, but the Lions coach would be loathe to change a winning formula. – Michael Whiting

Nine things we learned from round 19

CARLTON
Carlton will keep a close eye on the fitness of champion midfielder Chris Judd this week. Judd was forced to leave the field early in the third quarter with an ankle injury during the last round against Fremantle, and although he was inconvenienced he returned to play a key role. Talented forward Troy Menzel should be available to return after missing the game against the Dockers with bone bruising to his knee. Matthew Watson has been used in attack in the past few games for the Northern Blues and might be the perfect replacement for injured swingman Lachie Henderson, who will miss the rest of the season with a fractured eye socket. Utility Dennis Armfield, youngster Nick Holman and Irish rookie Ciaran Sheehan have been performing well with the Northern Blues and would be in contention to be elevated to the senior team. – Howard Kotton

A win makes a huge difference, but the likely season-ending finger injury to midfielder Taylor Adams is a significant blow for the eighth-placed Magpies. Despite the setback, Alan Toovey (back) and Paul Seedsman (groin) are on track to play against West Coast on Sunday although the pair face fitness tests later in the week. Star midfielder Dane Swan (foot) will also push his case, but is more likely to be available for the game against the Brisbane Lions in a fortnight's time.  Luke Ball, who was best afield with 23 touches in the VFL, could also come into the selection frame. Ben Kennedy (38 disposals and two goals) also did his best to force his way back into the senior team, while Clinton Young (36) and Josh Thomas (22) will be around the mark. ­– Ben Guthrie

ESSENDON
The Bombers have a couple of issues up forward with Joe Daniher (collarbone) already out, and fellow tall option Patrick Ambrose (jaw) to miss one-to-two weeks. Ariel Steinberg was elevated to the senior list last week and could make his debut after almost four seasons with the club, while Tayte Pears has been used in attack at VFL level. In the club's VFL defeat, Jake Melksham kicked two goals from 15 disposals, Leroy Jetta had 23 disposals and two majors, and Nick O'Brien had 26 touches through the midfield. They may be a chance to break into the senior side, but Essendon has kept a reasonably settled outfit in recent weeks in its better patch of form. – Callum Twomey


FREMANTLE
Huge mix this week at the Dockers but it won't include Michael Walters. Ross Lyon has stated he will return via the WAFL. Tendai Mzungu has been ruled out with a low-grade hamstring and Matthew Pavlich has to pass a concussion test before he is cleared to face Geelong. The Dockers WAFL affiliate club, Peel Thunder, had a 65-point win and everyone played well. Anthony Morabito (31 touches) and Colin Sylvia (23 disposals and two goals) are in the frame to replace Mzungu. Matt Taberner had 20 touches, took nine marks and kicked two goals to ensure he is the replacement for Pavlich if he doesn't play. Hayden Crozier (30 disposals and two goals) and Max Duffy (25 disposals and three goals) both impressed the coach with their performances and are in the mix to play. – Alex Malcolm
 
GEELONG
The Cats are hopeful of regaining ruckman Hamish McIntosh for Saturday night's big clash with Fremantle at Simonds Stadium. McIntosh missed the win over North Melbourne due to ankle soreness. Three young players are also pushing hard for a recall. Billie Smedts was a star performer in the midfield in Geelong's VFL win over Frankston on the weekend, picking up 32 disposals and taking nine marks. Mitch Brown also pressed his case by kicking 4.3 and taking nine marks (four contested), while Jed Bews, who played on Hayden Ballantyne when the Cats last played the Dockers, gathered 16 disposals, took nine marks and kicked a goal. – Adam McNicol

GOLD COAST
After missing the past five matches with an adductor injury, clever small forward Brandon Matera is likely to return against Carlton on Saturday. Matera played almost an entire NEAFL game at the weekend in the midfield and got through strongly. He should be joined by exciting first-year half-back Kade Kolodjashnij, who has overcome a hamstring injury that has kept him out of the past two matches. Kolodjashnij just needs to get through training this week to win back his spot. – Michael Whiting

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY
As they have done in previous years, the Giants have started shipping players off for season-ending surgery in a bid to get them ready for 2015, including Jeremy Cameron, Lachie Whitfield and Stephen Coniglio. But their reserves team keeps winning, recording a ninth straight victory last weekend as players put their hands up for more senior football. Ruckman Jon Giles is one who would love to add to his nine games this year. The first Giant to reach 50 AFL games for the club, he has been stuck in the NEAFL since round 10, but was named among the best in the reserves' win over Sydney Hills. James Stewart and Mark Whiley are also doing their best to force coach Leon Cameron's hand for this week's trip to Canberra. – James Dampney

HAWTHORN
There will be some unlucky Hawks miss out on a game against Melbourne. Sam Mitchell (flu) is certain to return after he and Isaac Smith (calf) were late withdrawals from the win over the Western Bulldogs. Smith could be touch-and-go, while Jack Gunston will miss. If the Hawks replace Gunston like-for-like then Tim O'Brien could be in the frame, while Jonathon Ceglar, Luke Lowden and Sam Grimley are also waiting in the wings. Brad Sewell is ready to return from his hamstring at either senior or VFL level. Billy Hartung, Kyle Cheney and Jordan Kelly performed well for Box Hill but will struggle to break into the senior side. – Travis King

MELBOURNE
Melbourne looks set to make changes after Sunday's dismal showing against the Brisbane Lions. Max Gawn is ready to return to senior football after beating Carlton ruckman Robbie Warnock in the VFL, while Daniel Cross should be included after making a rapid recovery from a leg fracture. Viv Michie was best on ground in the VFL and Matt Jones could earn a reprieve. Mitch Clisby must also be a chance to play his first senior game for the season. Jack Grimes remains 50/50 after injuring a hamstring at training and faces a test at the end of the week. - Peter Ryan

NORTH MELBOURNE
The Roos' bad run with injury is finally starting to abate, with Nathan Grima playing half a game in the VFL last weekend and Daniel Wells, Jamie Macmillan and Joel Tippett all chances to return this round. Grima might need another game with Werribee before he gets a senior recall, while Wells, Macmillan and Tippett are also likely to return via the VFL. Key forward Ben Brown could be recalled to take on Greater Western Sydney after making a solid return from a finger injury in the VFL on Sunday. North's best performers in the VFL included prospective debutants Trent Dumont (35 possessions) and Mason Wood (21 possessions and three goals), Liam Anthony (36), Brad McKenzie (23 and two) and Kieran Harper (19 and one) in a new role across half-back. – Nick Bowen
 
PORT ADELAIDE
Jackson Trengove will make a much-awaited return from ankle surgery against the Sydney Swans but Matt White (groin) could spend another week on the sidelines. The foot injury that forced Aaron Young out of the side last weekend will see him miss another match, while John Butcher will miss this week's SANFL outing as he recovers from viral meningitis. Sam Gray starred again in the SANFL at the weekend with 29 possessions, six tackles and six clearances and Jake Neade enjoyed his best game for some time with three goals. Tom Logan (26 possessions, 12 marks) was also a standout. – Harry Thring

RICHMOND
The Tigers will need to make at least one change with Reece Conca to miss the next two games for his crude elbow to the back of Devon Smith's head on Saturday. Steven Morris is listed as a test after missing on the weekend with a hand injury while Shaun Grigg is pushing for recall after a commanding 36-disposal game in the VFL. Matt Arnot is another who is in the frame after a few solid games in a row while Matt Dea was solid in defence in the VFL at the weekend. Chris Knights continues to build momentum after his horror run with a knee injury and is looking to play seniors by the end of the season.  - Jennifer Phelan


ST KILDA
There is pressure at the selection table as fringe players fight for their spot on the list with just four games remaining. A senior emergency last week, forward Sam Dunell pushed his case for a recall with four goals and 21 possessions for Sandringham in the VFL. Midfielder Seb Ross was also influential, kicking two late goals and battling hard at stoppages all day.  Others who could come up at match committee are Josh Saunders (28 possessions), Darren Minchington (three goals) and defender Tom Simpkin. Rookie Cameron Shenton, who was dropped for last Saturday night's clash against Gold Coast, is also available. He was the travelling emergency so didn't play at any level at the weekend. – Nathan Schmook  

SYDNEY SWANS
Two big names should be back this week to bolster the Swans in the run to the finals, Lance Franklin and Dan Hannebery. Franklin was a late withdrawal for last Friday's win over Essendon with knee soreness, while Hannebery is right on the cusp of his first match since round 13. The midfielder has had a slow, careful recovery from a nasty ankle injury and will give a huge boost to the side if he can regain his place for the trip to face Port Adelaide. Tom Mitchell returned from a minor knee problem in the reserves last weekend and impressed in about 40 minutes of action. If he can enjoy an injury-free run, he is one player who could force his way into the senior side before the finals series commences. – James Dampney

WEST COAST
The Eagles are coming off their best performance of the year, a 31-point win over Adelaide in Adelaide, and have no injury concerns. So the question is how does Dean Cox get back in provided he's fit? The other question is if Cox can't get in how does anyone else get in? Callum Sinclair dominated in the WAFL last weekend with 24 touches, 10 marks, 34 hit-outs and a goal for East Perth. Brant Colledge had 20 touches on return from injury. Blayne Wilson had 17 touches in defence. Simon Tunbridge (13 touches and a goal) and Ash Smith (12 disposals and a goal) had quiet days. – Alex Malcolm

WESTERN BULLDOGS
Easton Wood is a chance to return for Sunday's clash with St Kilda after the running defender responded well to his surprise axing with an impressive performance in the Bulldogs' VFL thrashing of Bendigo. The 24-year-old gathered 24 possessions to be named one of the Dogs' best. Key defenders Fletcher Roberts and Michael Talia continued their stellar state league form and loom as possible inclusions to a defence that was savaged by Jarryd Roughead. Key forwards Liam Jones and Ayce Cordy both impressed again in attack, while emerging midfielders Mitch Honeychurch and Lin Jong were prolific in the midfield. Veteran Daniel Giasiracusa was also prominent. – Ryan Davidson
