COLLINGWOOD youngster Jonathon Marsh has decided to retire after asking the club to release him from his 2017 contract.
The emerging defender was removed from the Magpies' senior list ahead of Wednesday's list lodgement two deadline after informing the club of his desire to return home to Western Australia.
Magpies list manager Derek Hine said the club supported the 21-year-old's choice to step away from the game.
"Jonathon is a young player of promise and we respect his decision to step back from AFL football and to be closer to his support network back home," Hine said.
"He leaves with plenty of good will and friendships, and we wish him all the best."
Marsh requested a trade back to his home state last month to be closer to family and friends.
A trade with West Coast or Fremantle could not be organised during the NAB AFL Trade Period, leaving Marsh to make a decision on whether he wanted to return to the Magpies or exit the club for good.
It is understood Marsh, who showed promise at Collingwood during the 2016 season, struggled with homesickness during his time at the club.
Marsh, the brother of Sydney Swan Harry, played 15 games, including 10 this year, in three seasons at the Magpies after being drafted with pick No.77 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft.
With the departure of Marsh, Collingwood will take five selections – picks 28, 44, 51, 62 and 65 – to the 2016 NAB AFL Draft on November 25.
