ADAM Simpson couldn't put his finger on exactly what went wrong, but admitted there was a bit to work on after having to settle for a draw against Gold Coast on Saturday night.

Raging favourites entering the match, West Coast left Metricon Stadium with just two premiership points after a last second Tom Lynch goal ensured the first draw of the season.

It was a slight hiccup in a rampant run of form for the second-placed Eagles, who now face their biggest fortnight of the season.

They host Hawthorn next Saturday night and then play the Derby against Fremantle the following week.

Simpson said they would learn from the performance against the Suns.

He was loath to just blame poor kicking – they kicked 11.17 to Gold Coast's 12.11 – and said the performance came on the back of a lack of maturity to handle tough situations.

"We're not happy, but you've got to give credit to Gold Coast," Simpson said.

"You wouldn't want to just blame goalkicking. We did have more scoring shots, but the game wasn't played on our terms and we didn't handle situations the way we had recently.

"I always thought the maturity of our group was still building and we're not quite there yet.

"You've got to go through situations where sometimes you are a bit off but you still get it done.

"How you handle those situations, how you handle the pressure, expectations, all those things, is part of the bigger picture.

"We're really disappointed with the result of the game, but we'll learn from it."

On the surface, the Eagles were far from bad.

They had more disposals (383-329), clearances (45-35), inside 50s (52-50) and contested possessions (159-130).

Midfield prime movers Matt Priddis (34), Luke Shuey (33) and Chris Masten (30) all had plenty of ball, while defender Will Schofield locked down Charlie Dixon.

"You look at the stats and everyone's got their numbers, even some of our KPIs look good, but it just didn't feel like us tonight," Simpson said.

"The collective wasn't quite on tonight.

"We've been up for a long time and we've got a really tough run in front of us. This is all part of the journey and we're not satisfied.

"We've got a massive challenge this week, we're playing the reigning premiers and I don't know the last time Hawthorn lost two games in a row, but that's our challenge."
