COLLINGWOOD premiership captain Nick Maxwell is joining Greater Western Sydney as the club further boosts its off-field football department.
In a part-time role, Maxwell will spend up to two days a week with the club's leadership group in Sydney next season, starting next week.
"I've been really impressed with the Giants and I'm looking forward to working closely with the club's leadership group as well as some of the young emerging leaders who continue to grow with each year in the AFL competition," Maxwell said on the club's website.
"I'm excited by the opportunity to help this driven young playing group at an exciting time for them and the club generally."
It is believed Magpies premiership teammate and Giants vice-captain Heath Shaw was influential in the appointment.
Despite several public on-field arguments, both were close in their time at Collingwood and have kept in touch following Maxwell's 208-game career.
The Giants have identified Maxwell’s tutelage crucial in moulding future leaders Dylan Shiel, Stephen Coniglio, Devon Smith and Jeremy Cameron who will all be in their fifth season next year.
Geelong premiership captain Cameron Ling has held similar roles at North Melbourne and Geelong in recent seasons.
Part of Maxwell's leadership role complements Simon Katich's lessening commitment to the club. The former Australian opening batsman is pursuing opportunities in cricket as ABC commentator and assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He will remain at the club in a part-time capacity.
Maxwell will return to a similar role at NRL club Melbourne Storm in 2016, while it’s understood his media commitments will not change next season.
The Giants have also added Lenny Hayes as midfield coach, while Mark McVeigh moves to backline coach with former Melbourne and Richmond forward Brad Miller coaching the NEAFL team.
