DALE Thomas is set to test his troublesome ankle in match simulation this week as he looks to "re-spark" his career.
This time last year, the former Collingwood star was battling ankle woes and significant contract speculation.
At the time, he told AFL.com.au he wanted to let his footy do the talking.
"That didn't eventuate," Thomas conceded when AFL.com.au spoke to him again on Sunday.
"I've still got an ankle and a contract, they're all going a lot better than what they were this time last year.
"It was hard to talk about, it was a bit of a distraction."
While the Magpies expressed doubts over Thomas' potential to return to his best after his injury-plagued year, Carlton is overwhelmingly positive.
Thomas is hopeful of taking part in match practice on Thursday at Visy Park.
If all goes to plan, he could play in Carlton's first NAB Challenge game against North Melbourne in North Ballarat on February 15.
"Hopefully I'll have at least a half or a game in the NAB Challenge at some point," Thomas said.
"My aim is (to play in) round one, and if I keep training the way I am, I'm very confident I'll get there."
The 26-year-old revealed he kept in close contact with Mick Malthouse after his premiership mentor left Collingwood.
"Mick and I used to catch up regularly anyway, so to be working under him again is fantastic, I've really enjoyed it," he said.
"A change of environment has been really good and really re-sparked that fire inside to get things going again."
Having moved from the black and white to dark blue side of town, Thomas is prepared for the reaction from Collingwood supporters.
"It's fantastic, obviously the Carlton supporters who once hated me are now right on my side and the Collingwood supporters who once loved me have quickly forgotten what I helped them achieve," he said.
"That's all part of footy, that's why our game's so great - the supporters are so fanatical, they love their club, and as soon as you go unfortunately they don't like you anymore.
"I'm just excited about the new opportunity and what hopefully the Carlton Football Club can achieve this year."
