On each weekday of the 2011 Toyota AFL Finals Series, Leigh Matthews will count down his 20 Moments of Greatness from the finals. Today: moment No. 15 when Daniel Chick smothered, followed up and handed off to enable the Eagles to take a winning lead in the dying moments of the 2006 Grand Final.

Coaches and commentators love to talk about one per centers - the acts of desperation that make life difficult for the opposition. But few could have imagined that such an act would have such a significant impact on a Grand Final.

It was the 23-minute mark of the final quarter in the 2006 Grand Final between West Coast and Sydney. Swans midfielder Ryan O'Keefe was shaping to hack the ball out of defence when Daniel Chick met O'Keefe's boot with his torso.

The ball bobbled in front of Chick, who shuffled it forward before scooping it up and handing off to teammate Adam Hunter. Hunter ran 20 metres to a vacant goal square. His goal put the Eagles seven points clear.

Leigh Matthews described Chick's act as unique, given the context of the game.

"Not only did he turn the possession, he laid the shepherd that enabled Hunter to kick the goal," he said.

The Swans scored another goal but were left one point shy at the final siren. The Eagles had turned around their four-point loss to the Swans in the 2005 Grand Final to earn a premiership.
