RICHMOND is pitching to the Victorian Government for a significant redevelopment of its Punt Road base that would allow the club to stage more elite football as it pushes for an AFL Women's license.
Carlton is also pushing for a multi-million dollar redevelopment of Ikon Park, according to Fairfax Media, with the two clubs submitting blueprints to Daniel Andrews' government.
The Tigers last year proposed a third AFL stadium for Melbourne, presenting a masterplan for their Punt Road Oval with up to 40,000 seats, but the latest proposal is scaled back.
Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said the proposed upgrade would provide comfortable seating for 8000 supporters and a more attractive entrance to the MCG.
"Given our location within one of the world's great sporting precincts, you're looking at a tired railway station, you cross the road with your heart in your mouth and nothing improves when you enter the outskirts of the stadium," he told Fairfax Media.
"It makes sense to invest given the location alongside the MCG. We believe there's a place for AFL Women's, an elite training facility, VFL football and under-18s.
"We need to ensure it remains a really rich community hub for a whole range of community and second-tier activities that it really doesn't make sense to stage elsewhere."
If adopted, the proposed redevelopment would rely on the Andrews government being re-elected next year.
The Tigers are pushing to secure an AFL Women' license in 2019 and currently host VFL matches as well as under-18s championship and TAC Cup games at their Punt Road Oval base.
