Former Hawthorn and Gold Coast player Campbell Brown says both players were given bans because of accidental contact, and the laws of the game needed attention.
The 2008 premiership player, whose 205-game career was interrupted by 29 matches missed through suspension, was critical of new bumping rules introduced this season.
"It was an accident and they got rubbed out for rough conduct," Brown told the Nine Network on Wednesday night.
"It was anything but rough.
"I just think you have to eliminate the bump.

"They say it's a unique, fantastic part of our game, but we'll suspend any player that does it and accidentally makes head contact.
"That doesn't sit well with me."
Fyfe's two-game ban has cost the star midfielder any chance of winning the 2014 Brownlow Medal, while Hunt's one-match suspension prompted head-scratching from Cats coach Chris Scott.
"We think that's inherent in the game that when your teammate has the ball, and he's being chased by an opposition player within five metres, that you have an obligation to get in the way and stop the player reaching your teammate," Scott said.
"We think Taylor did everything he possibly could to avoid breaking the rules. In some ways, he's been penalised for bad luck."
Another former AFL hard man, North Melbourne's two-time premiership player Glenn Archer, vented his fury on Twitter.
"Players being rubbed out for accidents has become a blight on our game and frustrates the hell out of me and so many others," he wrote.
