MELBOURNE'S task of resurrecting its stumbling season has been made more difficult with co-captain Jack Viney to be sidelined for the next fortnight with a shoulder injury.

Viney injured the AC joint in his right shoulder in a forceful bump from Tiger Sydney Stack in Wednesday night's Anzac Day Eve game at the MCG.

The co-skipper has avoided surgery but will still miss games against Hawthorn and Gold Coast, according to elite performance manager Dave Misson.

"Jack suffered a moderate-grade AC joint sprain during the third-quarter following a bump," Misson told the club's website.
"We'll monitor how Jack progresses over the next week, but our expectation is that he'll probably miss one to two games."

The tough midfielder left the ground in the last quarter of the game following the bump from Stack, before returning to the field later in the term.

Viney was cleared of any concussion symptoms during and after the game.

The Demons have just one win from six games and sit on the bottom of the AFL ladder after six rounds.
