Those who heard Brad Gotch’s interview on FIVEaa on Wednesday night will agree - this man knows football. (don’t worry if you missed it, we’ve got the audio above in the PTV player)

Appointed as an assistant coach at the Power on Wednesday along with Josh Carr and Shaun Rehn, Gotch spoke with clarity and intelligence, revealing his strong passion for the game.

The 49-year-old boasts a coaching career that stretches back to 1996 and includes three premierships as a senior coach (Springvale 1996 VFL, Prahran Dragons 1999 TAC Cup and Williamstown 2003 VFL).

Gotch, who spent the second half of the 1985 season at Port Adelaide after leaving Fitzroy, is known for his great communication and player development skills and has been involved with some of the biggest coaching names in the game, working with Mick Malthouse at Collingwood and Rodney Eade at the Bulldogs.

“I’ve learnt a lot in my coaching career and I want to impart that knowledge on the players,” Gotch told FIVEaa. “The biggest satisfaction I get as a coach is seeing them be the best that they can be.

“I’ll have a look at the training program and offer some thoughts about what I think is really important to get the squad and players heading in the right direction.

“We need to have a really good pre-season and we have to know how we want to play footy, the players need to know their roles and they need to be fit and strong and ready to play the way we want them to play.

“All good teams that I’ve been a part of - I think back to Collingwood in 2002 and 2003 in the Grand Finals - they’re a team, they know their roles, they stand for something and they’ve put in a lot of hard work.”

Gotch will take up his role as defensive coach in the next two weeks.
