Gold Coast draftee has set his sights on making his debut in round one
GOLD Coast draftee Touk Miller has his sights firmly set on a round one debut as he continues to adjust to the rigorous training demands at an AFL club.
The 18-year-old hard-nosed midfielder was drafted to the Suns with pick 29 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft after impressing with his leadership qualities and ability to win the ball in traffic.
The Suns' midfield depth will make it tough for Miller to break into the senior side in his preferred position.
Despite that, the youngster is still eyeing off a round one debut, albeit as a small forward.
"Making the round one team is the ultimate goal at the moment so fingers crossed I can work hard and get myself in the team," the former Vic Metro and Calder Cannons captain told the club's website.
Miller said the step up in training intensity had been a big challenge in his first month at Metricon.
"Definitely from junior footy to senior footy, the intensity around the track has been a huge one. You've got to be switched on the whole time, even from the get-go in your warm-ups," he said.
"When we do interviews and reviews of training, they've got clips of what you've done wrong. They've pulled up clips from warm-ups and not being intense enough. I think that’s a massive step up from what you get in junior footy."
Since his arrival at the club following the Draft on November 27, Miller has worked closely with former St Kilda and Carlton player Matthew Lappin.
The 251-game veteran arrived at the Suns in early November as the club's new development coach after spending the last few seasons working under Nathan Buckley at Collingwood.
Miller said Lappin's guidance had been instrumental in helping his initial transition at the Suns.
"I've worked pretty closely with 'Skinny' at the moment. He's probably helped me the most in terms of getting my kicking right," Miller said.
"(He's been) sitting me down and talking about team defence and structures that we've done and sort of working me through small parts of my game I've got to work on."
