Goodes hasn't attempted to run since last week and his coach John Longmire has expressed his doubts over the two-time Brownlow medallists chances of returning to the field this season.
His last appearance was against Port Adelaide in late June, when he damaged cartilage in his knee.
But the 33-year-old, who has previously demonstrated impressive recuperative powers over his 15-year career, refuses to call time on his 2013 season.
"Definitely," he said when asked if he thought he could play again this year.
"I've been working hard on and off the track. It's just a matter of getting through each session.
"It sounds strange but where I'm at at the moment, it's a session-by-session prospect.
"I won't be coming back this week, but I'll be trying my hardest to come back for the finals series.
"We're guaranteed two finals games, so I'm definitely going to try my hardest to get back for those."
Goodes also remains bullish about the Swans' chances of making some noise again in September.
The defending premiers have lost two of their past three games heading into Friday night's clash with Hawthorn at ANZ Stadium and are missing a host of their flag-winning stars.
But Goodes is upbeat about their prospects in the upcoming finals series.
"The team is tracking well," he said. "Obviously it was a disappointing result last weekend (against Geelong), but it was good timing.
"The boys have trained extremely well this week, it's a great challenge for us to play Hawthorn, who in all likelihood we'll play again first week of the finals.
"It's a great build-up to the finals series.
"Last year we lost to Collingwood, Hawthorn and Geelong before the finals series and that turned out all right for us.
"After this weekend we'll definitely be ready to attack the new season in the finals."
Goodes was speaking alongside Buddy Franklin at the announcement of the indigenous side for the coming International Rules Series against Ireland.
Franklin chimed in with "I hope not" when Goodes was asked about his chances of getting back this year, but the Hawthorn superstar remains wary of a Swans side that overcame his Hawks in last year's Grand Final.
"Oh definitely. If Goodesy doesn't play, we know that Sydney are a quality outfit and have been a quality outfit for several years," he said.
"We know they're going to play four quarters like they did in last year's Grand Final.
"It's going to be a tough game tomorrow night and we look forward to the challenge.
"It's a weird feeling too because we know we're going to be playing them again the next week too.
"We're looking forward to it."
