WEST Coast midfielder Luke Shuey admits that his actions were "selfish" after getting suspended for striking St Kilda's Tom Curren in round three.

Shuey was forced to watch Geelong thump the Eagles on television after accepting the one-match sanction offered by the Match Review Panel.

The 23-year-old knows he made an error and that he needs to atone for it this week against Port Adelaide.

"I got told it was just a bit selfish," Shuey said.

"I know that, so it's not on and we'll move on as quick as we can."

Shuey says it's been a really tough week after watching the Geelong loss from home, but he expects the group to rebound quickly.

"It's a long week off – much longer when you lose," Shuey said.

"It was hard to watch last week. We've got some great character and I'm sure we’ll bounce back really well."

It was thought that last week was West Coast's first real test of the season but the Eagles did face last year's preliminary finalists, Geelong, without Shuey, Darren Glass (hip), Shannon Hurn (knee), Mark LeCras (forearm), Chris Masten (hamstring), and Matt Rosa (illness).

Hurn and LeCras are still some weeks away from returning, but the Eagles will be much closer to full strength this week and Shuey believes they will get a much clearer indicator of where West Coast sits.

"There was a lot of talk going into the Geelong game that it was our first real test and, no excuses, we played really poorly," Shuey said.

"It's another good test for the group this week.

"Port are a really good side this year so we'll get a really good indication of where we're at."

Shuey thinks the side has a real grasp on Adam Simpson's new game plan after a full pre-season and four rounds of the home and away season.

"I think we're a long way there," Shuey said.

"I think we took some really big steps over pre-season and the way Simmo and the boys got us to buy into what they were bringing to the table was pretty positive.

"I think we've come a long way in just four or five months over pre-season and we've seen some really good things in the first few rounds this year.

"We dropped off a bit last week but good teams have bad weeks and we're hoping it's just one we can slide under the mat."
