Young forward Chris Egan is taking a positive approach to being ruled out for the remainder of 2007, with a solid pre-season and productive 2008 already on his mind.

The 20-year-old injured the posterior cruciate and medial ligaments in his knee back in May while playing for Collingwood’s VFL affiliate Williamstown, and despite predictions he would miss 10-12 weeks, he has not recovered as quickly as hoped.

“It was going to be 10-12 weeks. It’s been 12 weeks already, and I’ve been put on the long-term injury list so I won’t see any footy until next year,” Egan said on Magpie Radio’s weekly player show The Squawk on Wednesday.

“There’s still a lot of movement, because you’ve got to get a lot of quad strength up, and because I don’t have the biggest quads in the world it’s a little bit hard to build them up.”

After managing just one senior match in 2007 – in round six against Adelaide – for a three-year career total of 25, Egan admits to being disappointed after hoping to get back this year, however he’s bullish about his future prospects.

“It is (hard), especially given I was getting back on track. I was actually starting to train and get back on track, get through some sessions and out there running around.

“Now it’s about getting strong, I don’t have to do as much fitness work, just get the leg strong and come back for a full pre-season and 2008.”

Egan’s injury paved the way for first-year rookie Sharrod Wellingham to be elevated to the senior list for the remainder of the 2007 season.
