GEELONG forward Daniel Menzel could be available to play in Saturday night's blockbuster against the Western Bulldogs after being cleared of major damage to his injured left ankle.

Menzel underwent scans on Tuesday, which confirmed he had suffered a ligament sprain when he slid on the synthetic turf around the Etihad Stadium boundary last Saturday night.

The Cats said the 24-year-old would be undergo a fitness test later this week to push his claims for selection against the Bulldogs.

Menzel believed the artificial turf at Etihad Stadium contributed to his ankle injury and took his concerns to the AFL Players' Association.

AFL football operations boss Mark Evans said the AFL would seek to determine whether the same incident would have occurred on natural turf or if the synthetic product was to blame.

The League was due to speak with Menzel, who has played every game since round three, on Tuesday.
