Fremantle needs to be more 'brutal and uncompromising', says coach
FREMANTLE coach Ross Lyon has vowed to put the Dockers through a punishing pre-season in order to be more "brutal and uncompromising" in 2015.
After finishing the home and away season in fourth place, the Dockers crashed out of the finals in straight sets following losses to the Sydney Swans and Port Adelaide.
And Lyon did not mince his words during his speech at the Fremantle best and fairest at Crown Perth on Saturday night.
"We haven't been as brutal and uncompromising as we need to be and that's what we will be in 2015," Lyon said.
"At the end of the day, we exited in straight sets out of the finals and they were really disappointing losses, even though there were things we could take out of it.
"I could come up with a number of examples in all areas where we were not uncompromising, and that's something we really value.
"That's something that you need in the AFL system to be successful and clearly Hawthorn Football Club are an uncompromising football club."
The veteran coach said he had thoroughly reviewed all aspects of his football department since the end of the season.
Fremantle's first-to-fourth-year players return to training on Monday with Lyon predicting a tough pre-season for his players.
"We've sat down with our head of conditioning Jason Weber and it'll be a really demanding and challenging pre-season because we can clearly identify areas where we can work harder and do more work and more volume of work because we need to improve," Lyon said.
The coach also said there would be changes to Fremantle's leadership group in 2015.
The current group includes captain Matthew Pavlich, Aaron Sandilands, Luke McPharlin, David Mundy, Lee Spurr and Matt de Boer.
