WEST Coast veteran Luke Shuey says he will consider relinquishing the captaincy if he endures another injury-marred season in 2022.

Shuey is expected to be confirmed as skipper for a third straight season when the players hold their annual vote.

The 31-year-old is a highly respected figure at the club, but he has played just 20 games over the past two seasons due to a string of calf and hamstring injuries.

Shuey notched just seven games last year as West Coast missed the finals for the first time since 2014.

"It's interesting, you do need your captain out there playing, ideally," Shuey said on Wednesday.

"If this was this time next year and I had another season where I hadn't played too much footy, it (handing over the captaincy) would definitely be something I'd consider.

"But at the moment I've still got to be confident I'm going to get my body right and be able to play a lot of footy this year.

"If that is to eventuate and I do get voted in as captain and that's what the playing group wants, then I'm all for it.

"I've said before I only want to be captain if that's something my teammates want - I don't just want to do it for the title and to say I've been captain."

Shuey has embarked on a tailored program this summer in a bid to avoid any more soft-tissue injuries, and the early results have been promising.

The 221-game veteran is on track to play in the club's pre-season games against Adelaide and Fremantle.

"I had a really good run with injury for a long time, so I can't really sit here and complain too much," he said.

"If your soft-tissue stuff is an ongoing thing you're always looking to change things.

"Probably my last two or three pre-seasons have all looked different. But I've found a way to do it this year where it's working so far.

"Touch wood and keep going."

Star West Coast midfielder Elliot Yeo, who was plagued by osteitis pubis last year, hasn't rejoined main training since Christmas and was again restricted to light duties on Wednesday.
